Whatever the occasion might be for dressing up in costume, whether for a special party or just for the fun of it, people seem to love it. There is little doubt about it, the costume wig and accessory market is growing.

Wigs can give you a new look fast, allowing you to feel like a completely different person. But for those who do not use wigs for everyday wear, a good tip to remember is that hairpins are a must for wig wearing. Hairpins are used to secure the wig to your head so that you can hide your own natural hair.

A wig cap is a must as well. Wig caps, which resemble a small stocking, help to flatten your own hair and keep it in place when wearing a wig. It makes wearing a wig a whole lot more comfortable, too.

For non-veteran wig wearers who may only occasionally don hair other than that growing on their heads, cutting the panty part out of a pair of pantyhose and wearing that as a wig cap works in a pinch. It may seem silly, however, wearing a wig cap helps to keep you comfortable. And you can’t enjoy yourself and have fun unless you feel comfortable.

Whether you dress up as your favorite movie idol, rock star, figure from history, or simply create a costume of your own, a wig can make a great accessory. However, there is a bit of a knack to putting on fake hair. When you are ready to add this finishing touch, secure the band in the rear of the head, and then slide the wig forward at the temples until you find the ideal resting spot at your forehead.

Although some people choose only to secure the wig with the tightness of the rear band, others prefer to use hairpins to fasten the hair to their own hair or the wig cap. There also is two-sided hair tape available that can be shaped to the contour of a wig. The tape can be purchased at most costume shops.

If you are planning to attend a fun, casual party and merely want an inexpensive hairpiece to finish off your costume, you might choose to create your own easy, fun wig instead. All you need is an old baseball cap, some thick yarn (Polyester macramé yarn works great), and a hot glue gun.

You can choose yarn from a wide variety of fun colors. Don’t be afraid to get wild. Color is fun! Choose a bright, vibrant shade for a bolder look.

Before you start work on your own creation, select a cap slightly larger than the size of your head, or one that can be adjusted to fit. Turn the cap inside out. You may cut off the brim or leave it. Next, cut off pieces of yarn to the desired hair length. Make sure that you cut enough pieces to go around the entire hat.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the lengths of yarn around the rim of the hat, allowing the yarn to hang down. You can unravel the yarn to create fuller, thicker looking hair. Finally, you embellish the look by braiding or styling the hair as you like.

Cotton mop heads can be used for quick, fun hairpieces as well. The whitish gray color can easily be dyed with regular fabric dyes. The crazier the hair color, the more fun the costume. The strands can be untwisted and styled with hair clips. Simply flop the mop on top of your head, and secure with hairpins.

Whatever type of wig you choose to top off your costume, don’t be afraid to use your imagination. Whether you purchase a wig to go with your costume, or make one of your own, dressing up and playing make believe can be lots of fun, for kids and grown ups both.
