Wigs today are usually worn for a few simple reasons. Actresses/actors and other performers wear wigs so that they can change their hairstyle, length or color for a show, movie or performance. Some individuals wear wigs because they like to have a variety of different colors and styles of hair. And of course, wigs are often worn when an individual experiences hair loss due to chemotherapy or other medications and disease.
If you need to wear a wig for any reason you need to decide whether you want a synthetic or human hair wig. Human hair wigs offer more versatility and flexibility. You can style your wig differently from day to day if you so wish. But human hair wigs are also more expensive than synthetic wigs.
Synthetic wigs can save you time as well as money. You can place a synthetic wig on your head and you are ready to go. These wigs are able to retain their original style. You will not need to fuss with the wig to return to the original look. This is not to say the wigs look unnatural. Quite the opposite is true. In today’s wig industry many synthetic hair wigs do not look any different to the untrained eye than a human hair wig.
If synthetic wigs are not made from human hair, then what are they made from? There are several common materials that are found in synthetic wigs. Of course, many of these wigs are made primarily of nylon. Dynel and acetate fibers are also used and there can be others as well.
There are also monofilament wigs, which are further designed to make the wig look even more like your own hair. The monofilament is not a heavy or bulky material but rather is very light in weight. Monofilament would remind you of medical gauze. This fiber does not have it’s own color and so your own scalp can be seen through the monofilament. With this type of wig, the hair strands will be attached directly to the monofilament just like our own hairs attach individually to our scalp.
Synthetic wigs need to be hand washed. You cannot use a blow dryer after you wash the wig. It will need to be dried by the air. Usually you will want to use conditioner on your wig. There is even conditioner that you can purchase that is specially made for wigs. You will never use a hot iron or hot curlers on a synthetic wig. Extreme heat can melt and burn fibers in the synthetic wig. These wigs are not designed to be dyed or permed. So you know you will not be spending endless hours styling your wig. Synthetic hair wigs usually remain the style that they are upon purchase.
With the innovations in wig development, synthetic wigs really do provide a good option if you need a wig. They are generally long lasting just like human hair. The price is right with many low cost options. Synthetic wigs are affordable but this does not mean that they look fake. In fact, most synthetic wigs are not all that different in appearance than human hair wigs. Of course, you cannot make changes to synthetic wigs as you can with real hair wigs but still if you need an affordable wig, they are a good option.
