The Roman poet, Ovid, wrote many centuries ago about the balding of men in his poem entitled, "The Art of Love"; in his analogy, he compared the balding of men to the beauty of a tree without leaves; a field without grass- and ultimately calling all three an "eyesore". Although, many people consider this poem a true masterpiece and study it's words in college literature classes throughout the world- ask any bald man how they would critique it and you would probably get a sigh of disgust. Because, you see, the passage may have been first wrote in the dawns of mankind, but unfortunately, the words still hold true. Well, at least in the Western World. Men have been trying to conceal their baldness for decades with the use of toupees, or the chosen twenty-first century tag word, hair piece. For some, hairpiece, sounds more stylish and carries less of a negative connotation than toupee. But call it what you want, a hairpiece by any other name is a toupee.
A toupee is a small covering for the head; it's usually a small version of a wig that is worn on part of the head to cover baldness or thinning hair. Many women and men today wear toupees or hairpieces for this very reason and the market seems to be steady. Today's toupees are very different than the toupee's that were the butt of jokes on television and movies throughout the years; toupees today are often worn by stars and average Joe's without anyone noticing. They are undistinguishable between the person's own hairs, most toupees are made with paper thin, almost skin like base materials and each strand of human hair or synthetic hair is hand tied to the cap or surface of the toupee. This gives the appearance of one's own hair protruding through the scalp. Two of the most popular types of base materials used for toupee making are lace and monofilament mesh; both are great at hiding the obvious and creating natural-looking hair. As well, both of these base materials allow the scalp to breath and unlike toupees of long ago; this means more comfort, with less sweating and less itching.
Besides choosing a good base material when selecting a toupee; you will probably be asked to choose from natural human hair or synthetic hair. Many individuals choose a toupee that is made of human hair; they feel they offer the best all-a-round natural look and feel. They are more expensive and generally require more maintenance. Today's synthetic hair toupees are often less expensive and their texture and feel are comparable to real hair toupees; many people can't even tell the difference when touching the synthetic hair versus the real human hair.
Toupees and hair pieces are a great asset to many men and woman who suffer with baldness. Toupee's offer a great alternative to traditional wigs because they're light weight and only cover a partial area. Today's toupee makers work with customers on style choices, color choices, and even volume. Toupees are available at many wig shops and often times they will feature free fittings for men and women. As well, there are many websites on the Internet that can save a toupee wearer much money. Most come with simple directions regarding sizing and offer the web buyer strict confidentiality.
